Harnessing digital innovation and the emerging start-up community in healthcare
As part of the growth of digital technology which is now expanding in the health sector there are many business and research opportunities for up-coming
innovators and entrepreneurs. These innovators are keen to engage and understand the health system better and to present their ideas and potential solutions
to the people that matter.
In supporting innovation as a key driver for change, HISA will be inviting decision-makers and key people in the digital innovation space to participate in a
panel discussion on the problems and challenges they see in the system - and their perceived role of emerging research, digital technologies and the use of data.
Through connecting the decision makers with those innovating in the digital health space, we will unpack the pain points and opportunities for the health
sector. The outcomes from this session will inform future planning and follow-up activity for how HISA can support, collaborate and work together to advance
health innovation and entrepreneurship.

IT infrastructure in general practice - the business processes
Computers and information systems are an essential part of everyday general practice and technology is a cost of doing business that is not often thought about in a strategic way. Procurement and implementation of technology should be part of every general practice's business plan. The cost is not just about the upfront purchase price but the total cost of owning the technology over the life of the systems in the practice.
The procurement and set up of IT systems in general practice can be an expensive and time consuming undertaking. General practices require resources and support to ensure that they are able to make informed decisions regarding specifications, compatibility, reliability and costs.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this workshop attendees will be able to:
- Evaluate the cost and sustainability of IT services, devices and day-to-day operations in your practice
- Understand the considerations needed for IT projects including the human and financial resources required
- Understand the risks of implementing new IT infrastructure

Investing in eSafety
Despite the significant benefits now being demonstrated with the widening uptake of EMRs and EHRs, there is a new emerging problem of adverse events occurring as a by-product of the implementation and use of software tools and systems. This emerging area of eSafety is now very much in focus for vendors, healthcare delivery organisations and clinicians.
In Canada, the United States and the UK, there are now structured approaches to mitigating eSafety risks and concerns. These include systemic approaches to the application of clinical risk management to the development of healthcare information systems as well as management of clinical risk relating to their deployment and use. HISA is now evaluating how best to build on the experience and approaches used in those countries to ensure that we adopt the most effective, relevant approaches in Australia.
This interactive workshop will be addressed by leading proponents of eSafety who will share their experience, insight and strategies for identifying and mitigating the eSafety risks associated with designing, planning, implementing and using software in support of clinical care.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The delegates will leave with a clearer understanding of the nature of eSafety and how they can apply the principles of risk identification and mitigation to
their adoption and use of information systems in clinical care.
