Nursing Informatics Australia (NIA), a special interest group of HISA, is pleased to invite you to participate in NIA 2014, Australia's Nursing Informatics Conference, to be held on 11 August 2014 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
NIA 2014 is Australia’s only dedicated one day national nursing informatics conference – AND it has an impressive 20+ year history! NIA 2014 will bring together the best of the best in terms of informatics leaders. Delegates will delve into key issues in terms of social media, health literacy, integration, workforce retention, workforce education and patient safety.

| Bio >> Dr Grant Howard graduated from medical school in South Africa in 1991 and migrated to New Zealand in 1996. He became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, and of the College of Intensive Care Medicine before being led astray into management in 2004. Dr Howard completed an MBA, graduating top of his class while holding a variety of positions, including General Manager of Operational Performance and Support (Waikato District Health Board), and General Manager Waikato Hospital. In 2010/11 while Senior Director of Queensland Health's Medications Services to which the Queensland Health Blood Management Program was later added, Dr Howard also worked for a time as the Acting Chief Executive of The Centre for Healthcare Improvement (a Deputy Director General of Health in Queensland), and as the interim Chief Operating Officer for Clinical and State wide Services, Queensland Health. Dr Howard returned to Waikato Hospital as a wiser man in December 2011, completed the fast track Fellowship pathway in Medical Administration and works as a full time clinician with a forensic interest in management that you can follow at www.accountablehealthorg.co.nz |
Bio >> Jane Lawless has worked with whole of system approaches to nurse staffing for 8 years including leading the development of a national acuity-based staffing system for nursing and midwifery in NZ. Now based in Geneva Jane is an independent consultant providing expert advice, diagnostics and tools for healthcare organisations around staffing systems including the selection of IT based decision support tools. |
Bio >> Associate Professor Alison McMillan is Victorian Chief Nurse and Midwifery Officer and the Chairperson of Australian and New Zealand Council of Chief Nurses and Midwives. Through these two roles she represents and promotes the interests of nursing and midwifery in Victoria nationally and internationally as well as working to develop policies and initiatives to support quality, safety and best practice. |

| Bio >> Jody Olorenshaw holds a Masters Degree in Health Management and has worked in various roles within the maternity sector in both the public and private settings for over 20 years. She currently manages the delivery suite at St Vincent's Private, Melbourne, which caters for approximately 3000 deliveries per year and has been part of the project team responsible for the development and implementation of a clinical information system specific to maternity. |
Bio >> Megan Zigomanis holds a Bachelor Degree in Pharmacy and a Graduate Certificate in Health Services Management, both from Monash University. She currently works as a Clinical Application Specialist at Emerging Systems and has previous experience in hospital pharmacy and electronic medication management. Megan has held positions at both state and national levels for professional organisations as well as advisory groups. |
Moya Conrick Prize
All submissions will be given automatic entry to NIA's Moya Conrick Prize.
The Moya Conrick Prize is presented in recognition of the valuable health and nursing informatics work by the late Dr Moya Conrick via the best submitted paper and presentation at the annual NIA conference. The prize is based specifically on nursing informatics, including the quality, originality, contributions, subject matter and timeliness of the submission. All accepted author/s presenting at the NIA conference are eligible. Authors do not need to be members of HISA NIA SIG to be eligible for the prize. The Moya Conrick Prize is to be shared amongst all authors of the submission and shall be announced by a member of the NIA executive at the end of the NIA conference day.
Review Criteria:
Abstracts submitted will be reviewed and judged on the content and writing style as described below. Each paper shall be rated against each criterion:
- Relevance and importance (30%)
- Technical and logical validity (30%)
- Innovation (30%)
- Writing style and clarity (10%)

- Cancellations received on or before 7 July 2014 will incur a AUD$100 administration fee
- For cancellations received after 7 July 2014, all monies paid are non-refundable. Substitutions may be accepted, please contact HISA at hic@hisa.org.au
