INTEGRATED CARE
Dr Martin SeerAUSTRALIAN TELEHEALTH CONFERENCE 2015 Dr Martin Seers

Chairman
Homecare Medical (NZ)

BIO » Dr Martin Seers has been a family doctor in Christchurch since 1991. He trained at Otago Medical School and Christchurch Clinical School where he is currently a Clinical Lecturer. Martin is the chairman of Homecare Medical Ltd (HML) which is a joint venture between Pegasus Health in ChCh and its sister PHO in Auckland - Procare. HML has traditionally provided a Nurse triage service used across New Zealand by about 1/3 of General Practice and more recently is working in a pilot with St John's Ambulance in their Auckland call-centre to help callers get the most appropriate care when an ambulance may not be required. Homecare Medical has recently responded to the Governments RFP for Telehealth services in New Zealand, looking for innovation and coordination across the health sector. In 1993, Martin helped set up Pegasus Health comprehensive Continuing Medical Education Programme, based around ethical management of referred general practice services ( pharmaceuticals, laboratory etc), which now provides peer led education for GPs, nurses and pharmacists across Canterbury. He was involved in both negotiating the contract and then helping to set up the 'Acute Demand' services in ChCh, that has led to more services being delivered in the community and less hospital admissions - currently at 70% of comparable DHBs in NZ. He joined the Pegasus board in 1996, became Deputy Chair in 2005, and Chaired the Board from 2007 to 2014. Martin's interests in Pegasus Health have been varied and include innovations in health care, nursing development, Maori and Pacific health, clinical governance, finance & contracts and ethical use of health resources. During his chairmanship, Pegasus amalgamated with Partnership PHO; and Pegasus was instrumental in setting up the Canterbury Clinical Network - an Alliance framework for innovations in healthcare. He helped to lead the health response to the devastating Canterbury earthquakes of 2010/2011, and the subsequent development of 'Healthone' a shared patient record view across the entire health system. He continues to work 6/10 in his practice and enjoys the patient relationships and teamwork that form the backbone of general practice. He is involved in the 'Healthcare Home' work that is looking at new ways of delivering quality, coordinated, team care based in community settings focussed around the needs of patients.
