Our first Nurse Informatics Institute Day event was held at Sharp
HealthCare on Friday January 27, 2012 and it was an overwhelming
successful event. The event demonstrated that nurses are taking an
active role in becoming empowered to better understand the various
healthcare reform topics that will inevitably help to shape the future
of the healthcare IT landscape.
HIMSS Professional Development assisted in program oversight. Alongside
HIMSS Informatics, the program focused on helping to identify the
nurse’s role in the use of technology to improve the delivery of patient
care. It is obvious that nurses are leading change in the acquisition,
development and adoption of interoperable systems across the nation,
showing a quantifiable impact on population health. This program’s
success helped to reaffirm that fact.
Participants attending the Sharp HealthCare event had the opportunity to
learn from the nation’s leaders in Nursing Informatics and to build
upon career portfolios that will enhance the knowledge of the nurse’s
role in implementing information technology. Topics such as nursing
workflow, patient safety and outcomes that improve patient care were
discussed. There was overwhelming enthusiasm from participants, who
heard from Joyce Sensmeier, MS, RN, BC, CPHIMS, FHIMSS, FAAN, Vice
President, Informatics, HIMSS, Willa Fields, DNSc, RN, FHIMSS, Professor
in the School of Nursing at San Diego State University, Liz Johnson,
MS, FHIMSS, CPHIMS, RN-BC, VP, Applied Clinical Informatics, Tenet
Health and Barbara Radice, RN, MS, Vice President, SHARP HealthCare,
about how impactful nursing informatics can be in healthcare.
