Business intelligence system for government and community – what it may look like and how it can be established.

Join us for our last education event for 2015!

Traditionally businesses have used data as a fundamental tool for providing business intelligence. The analysis of data allows for improved service delivery or sales or for gaining a competitive advantage or greater market share. Governments from across states, territories and the Commonwealth are very keen to use routinely collected and administrative data for improved decision making and for the evaluation of government funded services and their outcomes. A large number of government funded services are delivered by the non-for-profit and for-profit non-government sectors, resulting in the inability to easily bring the service records together from across the organisational silos to understand and analyse the outcome from the provision of services and interventions. Given data from across multiple organisations would ideally become available to better evaluate and monitor the effectiveness of activities and policies on individuals behaviour and outcomes, this initiative is looking to capture data from both government and non-government information systems, for privacy protected analysis and approved use.

Increasingly, organisations and executives are seeking, and often demanding, policy analysis and research to assist with improved decision making and planning, and monitoring and evaluation. The ability for analysts or informaticians to gain timely access to data from across multiple organisations and government agencies has been a challenge due to a number of reasons. There has been, and continues to be, investment in the data infrastructure to enable greater access to data for analysis, with the objective of improving the value of the investment made in collecting and maintaining the datasets. Of course, a genuine return on this investment is also heavily reliant on data analytical skills and the ability of informaticians to make sense of the data and maximise its effective use.

Chris will introduce the work being done and the directions in South Australia, Northern Territory, nationally and internationally to expand the data analysis and informatics on cross sector data holdings
