Evolving health technologies

Healthcare analytics deals with a wide spectrum of areas of interest from internal organisational operations support and outreach (e.g. telemedicine) to global health and well-being. It brings to the fore a great deal of that which we already know regarding knowledge management as well as embraces aspects of the big data movement and the Internet of Things.

A particular area involving emerging technologies is the monitoring of individual data, e.g. Google is developing smart contact lenses that will measure diabetics' blood glucose levels and give feedback to the wearer as well as provide a continuous stream of data to assist in long-term program management. We can expect to see a forthcoming plethora of medically relevant technologies that produce streams of data that then need to be digested and made use of in some "intelligent" fashion.

Bringing together key stakeholders to collaborate in formulating strategy (e.g. using a group support system) is of special importance in sensitising stakeholders to the circumstances and setting the stage for the collection of data as well as managed integration of records from large health data sets in different states (health records in Australia are not nationwide) that are key aspects of applied analytics in providing enhanced insight to address societal issues in healthcare.
