Sixty-one (61) Medicare Locals were established as a key component of the Australian Government's National Health Reforms. Their role is to drive improvements in primary health care by coordinating primary health care delivery and addressing health care needs and service gaps at a local level.
Several representatives from NSW-based Medicare Locals will share information on the Medicare Locals’ governance and funding structures and share how health informatics will play an important role in driving strategic planning, especially as it pertains to key deliverables such as identifying and prioritising local primary care health needs, program delivery and after hours service planning.

Ian Corless
Business Development and Program Manager, Western Sydney Medicare Local
Ian has worked in a number of sectors across the public and private spheres and in a number of countries, starting in education and moving into pharmaceuticals. With a focus on sales, marketing and learning and development he has was worked in director level roles in the US, Asia Pacific, New Zealand and Australia with Merck, Sharpe and Dohme. More recently he has also owned and run his own consultancy working on leadership development, change management and market research in financial services, tourism, civil engineering and pharmaceuticals. Joining WentWest in August 2011 on contract to support the transition to Western Sydney Medicare Local, he is now working on contract until June 2014 in his current role.

Donna Sedgman
Integration Manager, Western Sydney Medicare Local
Donna has worked in health for over 25 years, in both the private and public sector. After commencing her career as a clinical pharmacist at Prince Of Wales Hospital, Donna joined industry and worked in various sales and marketing roles for companies such as GlaxoSmithKlineBeecham, Eli Lilly, CSL, Novartis and Novo Nordisk. With a passion for medical education she held senior management roles with Reed Publishing, Adis International and MediMedia where she developed education launch campaigns for General Practice medicines and specialist pharmaceuticals. Following this she established her own marketing and education consultancy business working with key clients such as Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, Princeton Medical, and various pharmaceutical companies. Over the last several years she has held various positions with Hawkesbury Hills Division of General Practice, Central West Division of General Practice and is now the Integration Manager of WSML.

Ms Sheila Holcombe
Chief Executive Officer, Nepean Blue Mountains Medicare Local
Sheila was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the Nepean-Blue Mountains Medicare Local on 15 May 2012. She has been working as the Transition CEO since January 2012. Sheila worked as the CEO of the Blue Mountains GP Network from 2006. Sheila is a Graduate of the Institute of Company Directors and an Associate Fellow of the Australian College of Health Service Executives. Prior to working in primary care Sheila worked for the Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA) from 1992 to 2005 in the areas of Disability Programs, implementation of the 1993-98 Medicare Agreements, Private Health Insurance Reform, Evidence Based Medicine and Secondary Use of Data and Data Linkage. During her employment with DoHA she also undertook secondments to the Consumers’ Health Forum in 1995-97 as the GP Policy Officer, and to the Medical Benefits Fund of Australia (MBF) as their Research and Development Manager from 2002 to 2003.
