HISA Branch Educational - Electronic Medication Management System (eMMS) implementation at St Vincent’s Hospital
Speakers: Silvia Fazekas, Clinical Information Systems Manager at St Vincent’s Hospital, SydneyToby Mathieson, Program Manager, eMedications Management (eMM) Package, from the National E-Health Transition Authority.
Our first Health Informatics Society of Australia (NSW Branch)
educational was held on 17 February 2011 at St Vincent’s Hospital,
Sydney.
Silvia outlined some of the key lessons from St Vincent’s successful e-Medication Management System
(eMMS) which among other things included: i) an innovative IT department
able to deliver timely home-grown solutions; ii) the involvement of key
stakeholders including the pharmacy and clinicians, along with vocal
medical champions; and iii) a robust change management strategy. Toby’s
presentation provided a national overview of the eMM program which aims
to provide clinicians with the capability to send and receive
standardised prescribing and medication information in a timely and
consistent manner to support improvements in the safety and quality of
healthcare. Both Silvia and Toby’s presentations complemented each other
providing both a national perspective for developments in medication
management along with key experiences and lessons from a successful
local implementation.
The educational was well attended and the Branch has received extremely
positive feedback about the quality of the presentations and about the
topic selection. We are grateful to St Vincent’s for their generous
support in making the event possible. For those who were unable to
attend, Silvia and Toby have kindly made their presentations available
to be accessed on our website.
