The Health Informatics Society of Australia (NSW Branch) educational on
Thursday 18 August 2011 was entitled "Health IT-enabled innovation –
health informatics research at the cutting edge” and attracted 40
people. The evening was introduced by Neville Board from the Australian
Commission on Safety and Quality highlighting the importance of research
and providing evidence of the role and impact of information technology
for the work of the Commission in informing policy and for the health
system more generally.
The research students from the Australian Institute of Health Innovation
at the University of New South Wales, including Julie Li (Centre for
Health Systems and Safety Research) who discussed her work on the impact
of information and communication technology in facilitating the role of
nurse practitioners, Mei-Sing Ong (Centre for Health Informatics) who
presented on automated detection of risk using a machine learning
approach, and Mirela Prgomet (Centre for Health Systems and Safety
Research) who talked about the implementation of mobile information and
communication technologies on hospital wards.
The evening ended with a call for more research presentations in the
future, a clear endorsement of the quality of the presentations. Our
