Jason Howden
Chief Data Officer, Department of Veterans' Affairs
After a very non-linear first 20 years in the APS Mr Jason Howden is now the Chief Data Officer (CDO) of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA).
Before joining the APS, Jason was a pizza shop manager, bank teller, blackjack dealer, discount furniture store man, and night manager of a hotel. Continuing the seemingly (actual) random career path in the APS, Jason has worked in Service
Delivery, Finance, HR, IT, Change Management, and Transformation roles across 8 APS agencies. There was also couple of years contracting in London, somewhere in the middle there.
Jason has employed a similarly diverse approach to education, with Diplomas in HR and Management, a degree in Adult Education, Master of Business, and Graduate Certificate in Change Management.
Jason was lucky to lead the implementation of the findings of a corporate review at the Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business which was a finalist at the Prime Minister's Awards for Excellence in Public Sector Management.
He was also a finalist in his own time, in the NSW Premier's Challenge to apply behavioural insights reduce domestic violence reoffending.
As someone who loves to learn (and is easily bored), Jason particularly enjoys the diverse opportunities that exist in an APS career.
