Race, ethnicity, and data in the era of COVID-19
Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, many posited that coronavirus did not see race, colour, ethnicity or social class. Soon however, it became apparent that these social determinants of health have a significant impact on who gets sick, who dies and who can
escape to the relative safety of a work from home lifestyle. The data to make the case for these health disparities have been difficult to disaggregate from local, state and federal data collection efforts, if collected at all, and efforts to do so
are driven by independent, not-for-profits such as the COVID Tracking Project in the US. Noticeably, in Australia, Victoria is the only state collecting ethnicity data for COVID-19 vaccinations.
